These medicines are opioid derivatives and they work to suppress coughing by depressing the cough centre in the brain
A chesty cough (phlegm in the chest) should not be treated with the above medicines. Ingredients such as bromhexine and/or guaiphenesin are more suitable as they help to break up the phlegm and ease its removal.
