All medicines for cold sore treatments should be used as soon as you notice the tingly/burning/itching sensation that precedes the formation of the sores.
Zovirax is the standard option that is normally recommended and is safe to use from 3 months of age and also in pregnancy. The only downside is the need to use it fives time a day (every 3-4 hours) to achieve an optimum effect.
Virasolve is a good option if you experience discomfort with your cold sore because the lignocaine provides a numbing effect; however the drawback to this medicine is that you are required to use it every hour for the first day, followed by fives times a day for the subsequent days to achieve a desired effect. Also, the safety data in pregnancy is lacking for this medicine.
Famciclovir tablets are, in my opinion, the most convenient method of all the above because all you are required to do is swallow 3 tablets at once and you are done. However; it should be noted that it should only be taken by adults over the age of 18, and the safety in pregnancy is still unknown at this stage
