Multivitamins are widely used today as a health supplement and it is readily available from pharmacies, supermarkets, and online stores, making it easily accessible. Today, we will be discussing about what multivitamins are and whether we should be taking them.
Multivitamins contain a blend of vitamins, minerals and sometimes other ingredients as well that the body needs. The contents of multivitamins differ depending on brands; however most of them will contain amounts that are close to the Nutrients Reference Values. Having said that, vitamin companies may have also conducted their own research and tweak the contents of the vitamins to reflect the results in their studies.
Eating a variety of food sources should always be the main source of nutrients. Most of the time, it is difficult to acquire all the necessary vitamins in our diet, which is where multivitamins come into play. Multivitamins will help fill in the gaps in our diet and offer a sense of completion. This especially holds true for people who are on a low calorie diet, have a poor appetite or have certain food restrictions.1
There are also specific vitamins out there that cater to certain medical conditions. For example, if you are at risk of osteoporosis, you may require a standalone calcium and/or vitamin D supplements instead of a multivitamin. The reason being is that these standalone calcium and/or vitamin D supplements contain higher amounts of the required vitamins, compared to multivitamins which only has minimal amounts to reflect daily recommended values. In essence, multivitamins serve as a general supplement to assist in ensuring that all the required vitamins and minerals of the body are met.
